FAQ

Q. What is Gunite?

A. Gunite is a process of applying concrete to a structure. It is commonly used to build pools as well as bridges, tunnels and water tanks to name but a few.
Gunite comes in two basic forms...a dry gun and a wet gun..

The dry gun method uses a gunite rig in which sand and regular cement are mixed and compressed. This mixture is then blown through a hose where water is added at the tip of the hose and then blown into the walls and floor.
The wet gun method, also known as shotcrete, uses premixed concrete. This mixture is pumped to a nozzle and placed "shot" in the walls and floor of the structure. Computers are used to control the concrete mixture by using a pre-defined design that can be adjusted at the site.

Q: How do I find a good builder?

A: When choosing a builder, pick one that you feel comfortable with and above make sure the builder is using proven methods to construct swimming pools. Some builders “hand-pack” their pools and this type of construction is not recommended by any reputable swimming pool builder. Ask questions relating to construction methods, cement strength, cosmetic results, maintenance costs, equipment repair costs and over all efficiency of pool operation. Ask your neighbors, friends and colleagues about their pool company as there is no better referral than word of mouth.

Q: How much does it cost to maintain?

A:  One thing to focus your attention on when building your pool is the aftermath of construction. Make sure you include at least an automatic pool cleaner because it will save you money and time! Wouldn't it be great to have a lawn mower that cut 80%+ of your lawn and you just had to take care of the difference? An automatic pool cleaner can do this for you. Of course, if you have someone providing this service for you, they will charge you less because they will have less to clean!

Q:  Can I Paint My Existing Pool?

A:  Most, if not all, concrete pools can be painted using paint designed to adhere to plaster type pool finishes. Rubber based, epoxy based and water based pool paints are three of the most popular and widely used in the business. Painted pools will require re-painting within a couple of years depending upon water chemistry and water balancing procedures.

Q:  How long can I keep my pool empty?

A:  If you are not the original owner of the pool, it is a good idea to find out who installed your pool. You may be able to obtain vital information regarding water tables and special situations that may have occurred during pool construction. Make sure there isn’t any flood irrigation scheduled to occur during the time you decide to empty your pool.
